ENEMY (a peace conference) explores the idea of peace and challenges the concept of enemies. The show focuses on the outskirts of Europe and aims to give a voice to local communities. It questions the meaning of peace in light of Europe’s current and past conflicts. Artists Mélodie Lasselin and Simon Capelle use their work to counter war imagery and depict conflicts in a different way. They draw inspiration from their research in the Balkans, where they met people trying to restore peace between communities for three decades. They also spoke with French and Italian soldiers who were involved in the former Yugoslavia. ENEMY (a peace conference) offers a unique perspective, allowing bodies to cope with the traumas of conflict through breath and voice.
ZONE -poème- is a performance company based in Lille, France, led by Simon Capelle and Mélodie Lasselin since 2016. They are directors, writers, choreographers, and performers of the company, which creates diverse works exploring contemporary themes and territories. The company serves as a platform for artistic experimentation, teaching, and research in the performing arts. Their performances and choreographic pieces have been showcased in France and internationally. Oracle (2018), the first piece of the company, at the festival Le Grand Bain in Roubaix, in 2020; BARBARE (European Museum of Translation), an ensemble of 28 performances, at le Vivat, in Latitudes Contemporaines Festival, at L’Oiseau-Mouche, as well as in-situ in the Hauts-de-France region. In 2021, Capelle and Lasselin were both finalists of the performance open call of Biennale di Teatro in Venice. In 2022, they were selected and commissioned by the European programme Stronger Peripheries to create a new piece on the communities. In this context, they created the performance ENEMY, which has been touring around Europe since 2022.
The production was created in the frame of Stronger Peripheries: A Southern Coalition, a large-scale cooperation project gathering 14 partners from 10 European countries. The project is funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe Programme and the Municipality of Cluj-Napoca
