Children’s lives in the previous centuries were very different from nowadays. Throughout history, children were seen either as sinners since birth, or as exponents of some supposed angelic innocence. In the Western world, only starting with the 20th century have children started to be less exposed to death, abandonment or beatings, and the relationship between parents and children have entered an era of mutual understanding.

But what is a child? That is a question “The History of Childhood” tries to answer at least partially, through four stories of children from past times that emphasize the evolution of the child’s status, as well as child-adult dynamics. Designed as a reflection of some basic components of the childhoods of our parents, grandparents or ancestors, the performance gives viewers the opportunity of a better understanding of past generations and the way our perception of youth education has evolved in time.

The coupé-performance “The History of Childhood” is the result of a partnership between MiniREACTOR and Gong Theatre and it represents a challenge for the members of the two teams, as well as for its young audience.

By bringing into light histories from times long gone by, we celebrate the way in which children have always experienced the world: with trust and curiosity, with courage and a fresh approach. Fully and with an open heart.
