OPEN CALL: Theatrical tools in times of crises and social conflicts

Between June 8-11, we invite you to a theatre workshop led by director Oliver Frljić, at the Reactor space.

This workshop sets out to explore political and artistic techniques in theatrical performance, approached from the perspective of the social contexts we are part of and how we relate to them. 

The workshop will focus on various performative strategies Oliver Frljić has developed across the different stages of his artistic career, often aiming to blur or even erase the boundaries between so-called artistic and political representations, or to deliberately conflate the two. Another key question will be how theatre can respond to emerging conflicts and to the often hypocritical reactions to these crises, which frequently call for artistic freedoms to be reduced or suspended, or that stigmatize artists who refuse to compromise them. The final part of the workshop will be dedicated to implementing various tools for overcoming the constraints imposed by the institutional depoliticization inherent to theatrical practices.

The workshop will be held in English and is open to professionals and students from various theatre specializations.

Places are limited, and applications will go through a minimal selection process. For this, please state your role and 2-3 sentences of motivation for taking part in the workshop, in your email.

Oliver Frljić is a Croatian-born director, internationally recognized for his controversial shows, which foreground social and political contexts and bring into discussion narratives underrepresented in official discourse. Besides his artistic work, he served as general manager of the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka for two years, and since 2022 he has been co-artistic director of the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, where he is also a house director.
