Theaters and cultural institutions are no longer seen just as places for artistic production, but more and more as wonderful spaces for coming together: bringing together artists and audiences, institutions and society, and connecting different communities!
At the exciting crossroads of public relations, dramaturgy (literary management), cultural management, and pedagogy, a fantastic new professional profile has blossomed in recent years. In Romania, this beautiful field is often called "cultural mediation."
In this cheerful, hands-on workshop, we will dive into the essentials of artistic and cultural mediation. We’ll explore exciting formats and brainstorm together on how they can bring fresh energy to your own practice. We’ll look at classic formats, like lively post-show discussions with the audience, as well as innovative projects designed to bring theatergoers even closer to the art and open up welcoming doors to a wider public!
We will also chat about the wonderful role of cultural mediation as a tool for inclusion, warmth, and active engagement for vulnerable groups.
Together, we will share ideas about what inspires us to connect and reflect on how we can build sustainable, long-lasting, and joyful relationships with diverse communities.

Since 2024, the wonderful Irina-Simona Bârcă heads the department of artistic mediation and participation at Theater Parkaue – the State Theater for Young Audiences in Berlin.
Between 2017 and 2024, she was a programmer and curator at the independent theater production space FFT Düsseldorf (Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf), where she lovingly curated the theater program for children and youth.
From 2014 to 2017, she shared her passion as a theater pedagogue at Parkaue.
Born and raised in Sibiu, Irina graduated from the Faculty of Performing Arts (Acting Department) at Spiru Haret University in Bucharest in 2009, and went on to complete her studies in Theater Pedagogy at the University of Osnabrück in 2014.
Between 2017 and 2024, prior to moving to Berlin, she also inspired students as a lecturer at the University of Cologne, within the Institute for Art and Art Theory.
She has been a proud jury member for several funding bodies and festivals, such as the Fonds Darstellende Künste (National Fund for the Performing Arts) and the biennial youth theater festival "Augenblick mal!".
She is also an active board member of the Dramaturgy Association in the German-speaking area.
Some of her favorite central themes include: developing exciting new collaboration formats between schools, artists, and theaters, exploring youth theater in the digital age, and creating playful, experimental, and participatory performances for children and young audiences!
