How to connect with your audience? (A cheerful cultural facilitation and mediation workshop with Irina Bârcă)

  • July 11-13

  • 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

  • Cluj Cultural Centre, 3 Fluierașului Street

Theatres and cultural hubs are no longer just wonderful places where artistic magic happens, but are increasingly becoming lively meeting spots: bringing together artists and our lovely audience, institutions and society, and diverse groups of theatergoers!
At the vibrant crossroads of public relations, dramaturgy (literary secretariat), cultural management, and theater pedagogy, an exciting new professional path has blossomed in recent years. In Romania, this beautiful field is often warmly referred to as "cultural mediation."
In this delightful workshop, we will focus on the joyful essentials of artistic and cultural mediation. We’ll explore various playful formats and reflect on how they can bring fresh energy to your own practice. We will dive into classic formats, like engaging post-show talks, as well as innovative projects designed to bring theatergoers even closer to the art and throw open the doors of our institutions to a wider public!
We will also chat about the wonderful importance of cultural mediation as a welcoming, anti-discriminatory practice, dedicated to inviting in and embracing vulnerable groups.
Together, we will share inspiring questions about the passion behind cultural mediation and explore ways to build sustainable, long-lasting friendships with diverse communities!

Since 2024, the wonderful Irina-Simona Bârcă has been leading the artistic mediation and participation department at Theater Parkaue – State Theatre for Young Audiences in Berlin.
Between 2017 and 2024, she was a program curator at the independent theater production space FFT Düsseldorf (Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf), where she enthusiastically curated the theater program for children and youth.
From 2014 to 2017, she brought her creative energy to Parkaue as a theater pedagogue.
Born and raised in lovely Sibiu, she graduated in 2009 from the Faculty of Performing Arts (Acting Department) at the Spiru Haret University in Bucharest, and in 2014 she completed her Theater Pedagogy studies at the University of Osnabrück.
From 2017 to 2024, before moving to Berlin, she also loved sharing her passion as a lecturer at the University of Cologne, within the Institute for Art and Art Theory.
She has been a proud jury member for several funding bodies and festivals, such as Fonds Darstellende Künste (National Fund for Performing Arts) and the youth theater biennial "Augenblick mal!".
She also serves on the board of directors of the German-speaking Dramaturgs' Association.
The heart of her work beats for exciting topics like: creating fresh new ways for schools, artists, and theaters to collaborate, youth theater in the digital age, and imaginative, experimental, and interactive performance styles for children and youth!
