Second Skin visits CNDB
June 14, 7:30pm
@National Dance Center Bucharest
Second Skin - a performance centered on the body and movement, a collective creation on a concept and
directed by Ferenc Sinkó - can be seen at the National Dance Center in Bucharest on June 14.
In Second Skin, a group of performers explore the marks that work, exposure and everyday
life leave on their own bodies. The tensions between the intimate body, the social body and the
professional body come to light through accumulations of gestures, impulses and self-reflection. The
body's memory is revisited and reconstructed in real time.
Passing through an endless string of situations that demand it be present, the body reacts as best it
can: it adjusts, freezes, withdraws, repeats familiar patterns. It resists. A thin,
identity-bound, transparent membrane keeps it alive and in tension. Under the pressure to perform, states
oscillate between pleasure and uncertainty, vulnerability and control. The body protests and learns to
adapt with force and determination. It wants to express itself honestly and, at the same time, to be accepted.
Giving in to the visceral, it sometimes discovers a fragile balance and unexpected forms of
freedom.
"I don't know what category to put the show in, it's certainly not a dance show
and maybe not theatre either. I'd call it, rather, a hybrid show that combines atmospheres,
images, performers questioning their body and their presence on stage, with situations that aren't very
concrete and without a well-defined story. I don't have a style of my own, I always leave that up
to others and I like to mold myself to the proposals of the people I work with. What I do have, though, is
my own approach to the process I use when creating my shows. I try to create
a conducive environment for a collaborative process. I work a lot with group exercises, I try to
devour the theme indirectly, through many discussions and exercises that on the surface don't seem to have
much to do with building the show." (Ferenc Sinkó, the show's director)

"As with any show, I hope the audience comes with an open mind and without too many expectations. In Second
Skin, the focus isn't on text, but on another kind of language, one they'll recognize and
decode easily. Anyone can resonate with the theme of the body through the lens of their own experiences. In fact, it
seems there's a kind of "empathy" created when we watch a body in motion, which
activates the locomotor system and makes what we see get mirrored and reproduced internally."
(Oana Hodade, who signs the show's dramaturgy and sound design)
The show premiered in Cluj-Napoca on June 7 and is part of the project Instances of
Labour - the contemporary body, which aims to investigate the concept of work and its role in
society, starting from the level of the individual in relation to social and professional constructs, but
also in relation to their own body and the way it is affected.
