“Turandot in the Empire of Whispers” is a delightful adaptation of the famous Chinese princess legend, playfully drawing from the works of Carlo Gozzi, Friedrich Schiller, the libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni for Puccini’s grand opera, and even featuring some dramatic touches from Camus’s “Caligula”!
Turandot, the legendary dragon-woman of ancient China, remains poised upon her podium in the Divan Hall, from where she once sent to their doom those brave suitors who couldn't quite pass her tricky trials. Though her once-opulent palace is now in ruins and those around her have passed on, she continues to relive her centuries-old legend—but this time, with a brand-new twist at the end! Unlike all the Princess Turandots before her who happily wed Prince Calaf, this enchanting Turandot simply never ages. Her breathtaking beauty, which once sparked empires to war, remains wonderfully untouched by time!
For our lovely Turandot, the wonderful theatregoers who gather to see “the woman who never dies” because she has hardened her heart are transformed into the Great Assembly that once witnessed the defeat of those daring princes. And because she still discovers that same beautiful human spirit after hundreds of years, she simply refuses to leave her spectacular story behind!
