Social inequality, manipulation, distrust in the political class, accumulated tensions merely waiting for a slight push to erupt violently. It is the year 1907, Romania is young, the world is seething. A little more than a hundred years later, we look back at this moment with an uncomfortable sense of familiarity. The world of Rebreanu's novel, brought to the Reactor stage almost as an act of self-defiance, is motley, raw, and fascinating – an excellently mummified ancestor that holds the key to our identity; that can tell us where we come from and, if we are not careful, where we might end up.
